On March 27, 2023, a mass shooting occurred at the Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee. At approximately 10:11 a.m., Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old former student, arrived on campus armed with two AR-style rifles and a 9mm handgun. Hale shot through the school’s locked glass doors and entered the building, beginning a targeted attack.

Over the course of 14 minutes, Hale killed six individuals: three nine-year-old students and three adults, including the head of the school. The shooter moved through the building methodically, checking rooms and firing multiple rounds. Law enforcement arrived quickly, and by 10:27 a.m., officers located and fatally shot Hale on the second floor of the school.

Subsequent investigation revealed that Hale had planned the attack in advance. Police found detailed maps of the school, surveillance notes, and writings indicating that the shooting had been premeditated. Hale had no prior criminal record. While authorities noted that Hale identified as transgender and had expressed emotional distress in personal writings, no single motive was publicly confirmed.

The Covenant shooting was one of the few U.S. school shootings in which the perpetrator was a former student targeting an elementary school. It reignited national debates over school security, gun access, and the management of mental health issues. The case remains under investigation, with several documents still unreleased to the public.
