On January 17, 1989, Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, California became the scene of a horrific public shooting. Patrick Edward Purdy, a 25-year-old drifter with a criminal history, drove to the school in the mid-morning hours armed with an AK‑47–style semi-automatic rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

At approximately 8:05 a.m., Purdy began firing across the school’s playground fence during morning recess. His attack was indiscriminate—he shot anyone in sight, zeroing in on children playing outside the fenced area. Within minutes, he had killed five children (ages 6 to 10) and wounded 29 others, including several teachers and staff.

Witnesses described chaos and panic as children screamed and scrambled for cover. The playground became a scene of unimaginable trauma. Fresno County deputies, already on alert nearby, responded within moments. Purdy fled and was confronted on a nearby railroad track. Rather than surrender, he fatally shot himself before officers reached him.

Purdy left behind typed letters in his motel room suggesting hatred toward immigrants and a deep-seated resentment toward society. His writings included racist slogans and claimed motives loosely tied to economic frustration. Investigators noted he had previously struggled with substance abuse and homelessness.

The Stockton shooting was one of the deadliest school massacres up to that point. It fueled national debate over gun control laws—especially restrictions on AK‑47–style rifles and high-capacity magazines—and prompted schools nationwide to reconsider playground and perimeter safety. For many Americans, it marked a turning point in awareness of the vulnerability of young children to mass violence.
